The End Justifies the Means? Really?

There’s a subgroup of humans I find particularly contemptible. Usually I use the term “contemptible” to describe politicians and their remora, but more and more I find it an apt label for the “Christians” who advance their check-the-box systems of belief by cozying up to scumbag politicians who have their own self-serving agendas.  Maybe they tell themselves that Jesus would approve of this crummy behavior. Or maybe they believe that Jesus actually tells them to. Certainly they believe that the end justifies the means–even if it means annointing oneself with the slime of politics.

Long ago I was taught that the “Christian” brand referred to someone who aligned his or her inner and outer life with the simple teachings of Jesus–you know, like what he said (and, incidentally, didn’t charge a penny for) in the Sermon on the Mount. I think of the Sermon, and I wonder how anyone who calls himself or herself a “Christian” would allow himself or herself to be steered by some “faith leader,” or priest, or pastor, or whatever to grovel at the feet of venal, sleazy politicians. Nowadays when I witness some self-described “Christian” genuflecting before icons of temporal, secular power, my experience informs me that I’m seeing a bamboozled dupe rather than a follower of Christ.

Oh, I’m no biblical scholar or theologian. And of course I know that all Christians are not keen to ally themselves with the likes of, well…you know. I also reckon that lapsed Catholic that I am, some zealous “Christians” wouldn’t consider me much of a “Christian” at all, not even half of a half-assed one, so I guess my opinion will be reviled by those “people of faith,” and they can enjoy the satisfaction of believing that I’ll spend eternity writhing and shrieking in the fiery pits of hell. Although, maybe not, because I know they love me anyway for are they not fond of professing “love the sinner; hate the sin”?

Given the path the USA is rushing down, I’m relieved that I’ll be long gone by the time the Thought Police are sniffing out people like me to be disappeared in a Re-Education Camp way out in the middle of nowhere. Now that would be Hell.
